Looking for sprout advice

I love sprouting but I am looking for advice to improve my sprout skills. Tell me anything you know about sprouting... I am trying 3 ways here to see what results I like best. Thanks!

O,h dear , in at the deep end already . I have a lot to learn , first i know nothing about sprouting. I know how to do it but do you eat them raw or stir fry. I,m a patchwork and quilter

I only know that you can sprout most grains in a mason jar with a mesh top. Just don't forget to rinse them every day after they start sprouting.

I have tried the stacking trays and the jam jar with the perforated lid which has an arm at the side so you can set the jar to drain in a tilted position.
I found the jar method much easier than the stacking trays....and the results were better too.

I have have always used the jar method. I tried one of those burlap type sprout bags a couple times and decided the jar works best. Simple and easy, works everytime. I just soak them , then rinse them twice a day. Simple process and you don't need anything fancy!

When I've done sprouts I do as Tara says...soak, rinse 2x a day, keep in a dark place till you see the sprouts get a bit long, then the sunshine for a day to green 'em up.

I have a sprout tray and I also use a jar. I usually use the tray just because seeing it is a trigger for me to rinse the sprouts. I usually leave my house for work an hour after I get up in the morning, so I am usually flying through the kitchen. The jar isn't really on my radar, but that sprout tray always looks out of place and helps to remind me to rinse.

What kind of sprouts are you sprouting?

I just pour a few tablespoons of beans in a glass jar with a lid and fill it with water. Let them soak overnight on the counter. In the morning, rinse. Don't refill the water just put the lid on. Rinse and cover morning and night for a two or three days then store in the frig still rinsing morning and night. You want them to stay moist--not dry or soaking. We start eating them while they're still on the counter. If they get stinky or slimy, toss them. Mung beans work great--I just buy them in the bulk foods section.

Okay I am just about to start sprouting and am hoping to dehydrate the grains to grind into flour. Therefore I am no expert but I got a lot of great info from http://www.thenourishinggourmet.com There are also some very amazing looking recipes on there... oh my. Hope it helps?

All this wonderful advice about sprouting. I have mung ,but would like to know other kinds ,and more importantly ways of using them ,raw or cooked. come on girls educate an English woman

hi, I've done lentil sprouts in a jar, with cheese cloth (my mum used old pantyhose)over the top held on by a rubber band. They taste great, cold from the fridge. I soaked the lentils for about 12 hours and then rinsed them and let the jar sit on the window sill. I rinsed them once or twice a day until the little sprouts formed and then put the lid on the jar and put them in the fridge. It only took a few days, but it is hot here, 86 to 91 degrees. (I just had to convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit lol) It might take a bit longer there?

I tried sprouting in the green device you have and ended up giving it away...I find nothing better then sprouting in a masson jar with some cheese cloth...
I put 1 to 2 tbsp (not sure because I don't measure it)of seeds in bottom of masson then cover it with cheese cloth and a rim..I rinse my seeds every morning in warm water twice and make sure they are fully drained...I live my jar in the warm kitchen and in about 5 days (or less) I have beautiful sprouts to eat...yummy!

Hi Ang, I happen to have two jars sprouting right now! I have some raw sunflower seeds in one and a combo of red clover and broccoli in the other. they are just beginning to sprout!

I have tried the tray method and much prefer the jar method with screen top. ( just a piece of screening and ring lid) It is easy, I don't have to store an extra gadget, just use the jars I have.

To answer your question...I live the a thin layer of cheese cloth on with the rim...never taking it off....
a thin layer provides enough thickness to keep the seeds in while allowing to be able to rinse off well...I also keep the jar laying on it's side...shaking the seeds to disperse them evenly..i find this much quicker to produce seeds quickly...plus I never put them in the dark..I always leave my jar to grow on the counter and it never smells...
I'll start some later today and post pics to show..hope this help you...

I, too, had the tray and hated it. It was way too much trouble and difficult to clean. I prefer the jar method. Hadn't thought about sprouts lately...thanks for the reminder!

For little seeds like alfalfa, jar is the best.

But for anything else, beans, lentils, etc. a colander works just fine. Then you can just fill a bowl of sink and rinse by dunking it. Then still use the water for something else.

Love your blog!

I do lots of sprouting, especially at this time of year. My favourite seeds to sprout are lentils (any kind). I use all sorts of different containers and I find they all work well depending on the seeds you are using.

I use jars for large seeds like mung beans and my trays for small seeds (like alfalfa).

I make sure that I swap my three tiered trays around everyday when I'm rinsing and give the seeds a good shoogle so they don't go all stagnant.

I find that the key is to make sure that you give them a vigorous rinse everyday and clean the jars/trays very well when you're finished.

I've got some great recipes for burgers and what not. Delicious!
